Arnold started her TV career as a studio camera operator and floor director in production at WHO-TV, an NBC-affiliated television station in Des Moines, Iowa, where she worked part-time weekends and nights. One year later, she was employed as an on-set consumer reporter, and a general assignment reporter making her the first woman in the news industry. She went on to work for WAVE-TV, an NBC-affiliated station in Louisville, Kentucky, the next year, as a Weekend News Producer/Anchor/Reporter.
After 1 year, she was hired as a weekday noon reporter/anchor at an NBC-affiliated television station in Baltimore, Maryland, WBAL-TV, for 2 years. She then joined WKYC-TV, an NBC-affiliated station in Cleveland, Ohio, where she served as the lead anchor of the 6 pm and 11 pm newscasts for 2 years.
