Olinares joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces in February 2022, soon after Ukraine was invaded by Russia. He had been living in Ukraine for half a year – he was a former United States Marine who almost died in the Donetsk region. When the invasion happened, Olinares immediately started thinking of how he could assist his home country. He was already considering leaving his job at F5 – but his decision became clear after seeing a video of 3 Ukrainian kids throwing a Molotov cocktail at a Russian tank.
Olinares bought a plane ticket and told his supervisor about his plans in the following days. To his surprise, instead of trying to change his mind, his superiors at F5, Inc. promised their full support and quickly worked out the details. After Olinares used all his paid leave, the company extended his absence and even offered him 3 months of commission the following day. Even more unexpectedly, Olinares received a call from François Locoh-Donou (F5’s CEO and President), who assured him that his job would be waiting for him whenever he returned. François spoke with Olinares for about 15-20 mins, asking about his journey and wishing him the best.
Before Olinares left, his F5, Inc. team threw him a party (of farewell) to show their gratitude. They also collected money to help him purchase tools, clothes, and other gear he needed for the conflict zone. Olinares told his manager he did not want his colleagues to go out of their way for him – but his manager explained that the team wanted to help however they could. In Ukraine, Olinares got help from buddies to make the right connections. He eventually joined the Special Forces unit of Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces, where he developed a training program to prepare civilians – some who had never used a gun – for combat.
