Zakaria graduated from the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and then attended Yale University. He graduated from the university in the year 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts. During his stint there, he served as editor-in-chief of the Yale Political Monthly and the president of the Yale Political Union.
