Leonard earned a Bachelor of Science in meteorology from City College of New York and a Master of Science in meteorology from New York University, where he was also a meteorology instructor. When it comes to his career, Leonard recently served at WCVB as a Chief Meteorologist. He began as a co-chief meteorologist of Storm Team 5 at WCVB, where he worked along with his longtime friend Dick Albert, who retired in the year 2009. For 25 years, Leonard was previously best known as a meteorologist at Boston’s WHDH-TV. Harvey worked as the chief meteorologist for WHDH-TV from May 1977 to April 2002 before joining WCVB.

He was named “Best Weatherperson” in the People’s Choice category by Boston Magazine in 2015, marking the fifth time in his career that the magazine’s readers have given him this honor. The Improper Bostonian had previously named him the Hub’s “favorite forecaster.” Harvey also won four New England Emmy Awards for outstanding achievement in weather casting on television. For more than twenty-five years of broadcast excellence, Leonard received the Silver Circle Award from NATSNE in 2003.

Harvey Leonard Retirement, Retiring
Leonard announced his retirement in the early May of 2022. His last nightly weather forecast was on May 25. He retired from his meteorology career after a 5-decade stint, including over four and half decades covering New England’s fickle weather. During his retirement announcement, he stated that he will continue as the WCVB’s chief meteorologist emeritus beginning in the fall and will be a contributor to severe weather and climate coverage important to our community.
Harvey is involved in a number of community organizations, including the Huntington’s Disease Society of America, for which he participates in annual fundraisers to aid in the search for a cure while also providing support and services to those living with the disease and their families. He volunteered as co-master of ceremonies for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s event for several years, and he has also served as master of ceremonies for the Boston Prostate Cancer Walk.
