Jeff Lawson Education

Lawson attended Penn State University to pursue his career. In 1980, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology. While studying, he served the Campus Weather Service and provided forecasts for radio stations throughout Pennsylvania. The emergency planners called asking which areas to evacuate because of the radiation fallout. They handled the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant meltdown. To Lawson, this was a memorable forecast.

During the Christmas and summer breaks, he worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. While there, he developed methods of estimating the strength of tropical systems from satellite pictures alongside Dr. Vern Dvorak. The National Hurricane Center uses those methods to estimate how strong tropical systems are when they are in between recon flights or are too far away to be accessed by hurricane hunter aircraft.

Jeff Lawson Career

Lawson is a Chief Meteorologist at 13News Now. He joined the station in August 1990, he has served 13News Now for over 25 years as a chief meteorologist. Lawson was confused when choosing his career whether a chemical engineer or a meteorologist. In Virginia, no school had Meteorology as a major, so he applied to Penn State. If the university turned him down, he planned to attend Virginia Tech and major in Chemical Engineering.

Upon graduation, he worked for Accu-Weather. While there, he used to call non-meteorologists weathercasters, to tell them what to say on television that night. In addition, he also forecasted for municipalities, ski resorts, and power companies.

After some time, he left Accu-Weather for WeatherCenter. While there, he forecasted weather for radio stations across North America, The Boston Globe, and also Exxon’s offshore oil rigs. He began his career job as a meteorologist at WWBT/NBC12 Raycom Media in Richmond for four years. He also worked as a weekend meteorologist at WTTG, the FOX station in Washington, D.C.

Lawson says that he does his own forecasting without looking at any other person’s forecast. He believes that his audience gets forecasts that are more accurate and different from other stations where people have little or no training in Meteorology and rely primarily on the National Weather Service to tell them what to say.
