Pegues went to high school in Westport, Connecticut, where he was an All-State sprinter, and the All-Conference was back on the soccer squad. Pegues is a proud alum of the University of Ohio, Miami, where he was a scholarship soccer player and a major beneficiary in the early 1990s.

Pegues has spasmodic dysphonia(“shakey voice”) that causes his voice to sound strained due to involuntary spasms in the muscles of the larynx. In July 2021, Pegues revealed that the condition was neurological and had no cure.

Pegues said that he attributed the disorder to anxiety. He said that he had noticed that his voice was weakening 5 years back and he feared that his career was over. To treat the disorder, he tried vocal cord Botox as a form of treatment. Moreover, he said that the treatment was working since he could speak more comfortably than before.

Before the treatment, Pegues said that he had a hard time and became introverted because he was self-conscious about speaking to the point of refusing radio interviews. Pegues revealed that he shared his story so that he could be honest with the people around him and himself. Also, he stressed the importance of paying attention to one’s mental and physical health.
