Acosta graduated from Annandale High School in the year 1989 and then enrolled at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He graduated from the university in the year 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications and a minor in Political Science. During his stint at the university, he volunteered for a student-run radio station, WXJM, and served at WSVA (local radio station) as a reporter.

Acosta serves at CNN as a Chief Domestic Correspondent and Anchor. Before joining the station, he served at CBS News as a correspondent. He spent 4 years and 1 month there (February 2003 – February 2007), first as a correspondent based in New York, and then later based in Atlanta. There, he covered various stories including Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War from Baghdad, and the 2004 campaign of John Kerry (Democratic presidential candidate).

Before going to CBS News, he worked for WBBM-TV (CBS affiliate) in Chicago, Illinois as a news reporter. He worked for KTVT-TV (CBS affiliate) in Dallas, Texas as a news reporter. Acosta started his journalism career in radio, where he worked for WMAL in Washington, D.C. From there, in the year 1994, he now began working on TV, where his first TV station was WTTG-TV, a Fox-affiliated station in Washington, D.C. His role there was a desk assistant. In the year 1995, he went to work for WBIR-TV, an NBC-affiliated station in Knoxville, Tennessee as a substitute anchor and reporter. His next move was to KTVT.

On weekends, he anchors CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta on CNN, and on Thursdays and Fridays, he anchors CNN Newsroom on CNN Max. He began as a correspondent, then in February 2012, he transitioned to National Political Correspondent. In September 2013, he became the Senior White House Correspondent, and in January 2018 Chief White House Correspondent. 

As a chief White House correspondent, Acosta earned national attention for President Donald Trump’s clashes with him at press briefings. This was during Donald Trump’s administration. As a Senior White House correspondent, Acosta took coverage of President Barrack Obama’s administration’s strategy for destroying ISIS (a terrorist organization) in November 2015.

In March 2016, Acosta went to Cuba to report on President Barack Obama’s historic trip to the island. Joining CNN, he worked for the American Morning program, where he served as a contributor to CNN’s coverage of the 2010 midterm elections. As a national political correspondent, he took coverage of the 2012 presidential campaign of Mitt Romney (Republican nominee), and for the coverage, he became the lead correspondent. 

In the subsequent year after joining CNN, Acosta often appeared on “Ballot Bowl,” CNN’s weekend political program, where he served as an anchor. He covered the 2008 presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama (Democratic candidates).

On August 2, 2017, during a debate at a White House press conference, Acosta got into a heated argument with Stephen Miller (White House senior policy advisor). After Kaitlan Collins got banned from the official press conference by the White House on August 2, 2018, and after a statement from Donald Trump, Acosta asked Sarah Huckabee Sanders (press secretary of the White House) if she evaded herself from that statement. The statement was “FAKE NEWS media… is the enemy of the American People.”  Sarah Huckabee was neither declining nor supporting the statement and she argued over her own treatment by the media. Acosta was panned by many conservatives and praised by many liberals.
