Jimmy Johnson Career and Education

Johnson is an alumnus of the University of Arkansas. He serves as the FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst alongside hosts Curt Menefee and Terry Bradshaw and analysts Howie Long and Michael Strahan. He is a well-known former NFL and college football head coach who has won the Super Bowl and the College Football National Championship. Johnson was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s centennial class in 2020.

He was the architect of the Dallas Cowboys’ consecutive Super Bowl XXVII and XXVIII wins, serving as the organization’s head coach from 1989 to March 1994. On February 25, 1989, he was named to the job, the day after Jerry Jones, a collegiate teammate, purchased the franchise.

Following his retirement as head coach of the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Cowboys at the end of the 1993 season, Johnson joined FOX Sports in April 1994 as an analyst on the then-new FOX NFL SUNDAY pregame show, where he stayed for the first two seasons.

Johnson returned to the role in 2002, after a four-year tenure as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, during which he guided the team to three playoff appearances. In April 2019, FOX NFL SUNDAY was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Johnson is one of only six head coaches in NFL history to lead a team to back-to-back Super Bowl victories, and he was voted NFL Coach of the Year by at least one national media source in three of his final four years with the Cowboys.

During that time, his clubs went 50-22 (.694), with the Cowboys winning 39 of their last 50 games (.780). In 1992, he led the team to a franchise record of 13 regular-season victories and a team record of 16 overall wins. He led the Cowboys to a 44-36 regular-season record and a 7-1 postseason record as head coach.

Johnson signed a four-year deal to become the Miami Dolphins’ head coach and general manager in 1996. He took over for the legendary Don Shula, becoming the franchise’s third head coach. Johnson went 36-28 in four seasons at Miami and went 2-3 in five playoff games. He left the Dolphins on January 16, 2000, with an 80-64 regular-season record and a 9-4 postseason record as an NFL head coach.

Johnson joined the NFL after five seasons and a 52-9 record as head coach at the University of Miami, where he won two Orange Bowls, finished second twice, and won the national championship in 1987. He was the first coach, and one of only two in football history, to lead a Super Bowl champion and a national college champion team.

Johnson started his coaching career in 1965 as the defensive line coach at Louisiana Tech. Later in his career, he coached at Wichita State, Iowa State, Oklahoma, and Pittsburgh. Johnson took over as head coach at Oklahoma State in 1979 and went 29-25 with two bowl appearances in five seasons.
