Joel Klatt Career
Klatt works as the college football color commentator and FOX Sports’ lead college football game analyst, sitting alongside play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson and reporter Jenny Taft. His first break in broadcasting came in the fall of 2006 when he filled in as an analyst on Friday night high school football games in the Denver area for FOX Sports Rocky Mountain.
Shortly after, from 2007 to 2008, he worked as a studio host for FOX Sports Southwest’s Saturday college football coverage, and in 2009, he landed a package of college games as a color analyst for FOX Sports Net. Back in Denver, Klatt used his baseball knowledge to host the Colorado Rockies’ pre-and post-game shows on Root Sports Rocky Mountain.
From 2007 to 2012, he hosted a series of sports radio shows in the Denver area, including a popular program on the FM station 104.3 The Fan. He left the Denver area in 2013 to join FS1 for its August debut. Klatt spent his first two seasons with FS1 and the FOX television network as a full-time studio analyst for the network’s college football coverage, as the host of FOX NFL KICKOFF, and as a part-time game analyst, mainly working Thursday night games on FS1 and 2014 Pac-12 Championship Game on FOX.
Klatt was promoted to FOX Sports’ lead college football game analyst prior to the 2015 season, working alongside play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson. From 2015 to 2019, he contributed to FOX Sports’ coverage of the US Open Championship, demonstrating his remarkable versatility.
Klatt entered the program as a chosen walk-on in 2002 and went on to set 44 school records as the Buffaloes’ starting quarterback from 2003 to 2005. In his first season as a starter at Colorado, he became just the third player in school history to pass for more than 2,500 yards, totaling 2,614 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Klatt finished his career as the all-time leader at Colorado in passing yards (7,375), touchdowns (44), competition percentage (60.8), and completions (666). His 44 school records were the second-most by a Colorado student-athlete in any sport, behind only Byron “Whizzer” White’s 51 as a halfback from 1934 to 1937.
Klatt is a rare analyst who has competed professionally in two major sports. His college football career was originally postponed due to his post-high school career in professional baseball. Klatt was drafted in the 11th round of the 2000 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the San Diego Padres and spent two seasons in the club’s minor league system before retiring from baseball to pursue a career on the gridiron at CU. Following his graduation from Colorado, he was invited to rookie mini-camps with the Detroit Lions and the New Orleans Saints in 2006, and the Saints signed him as a free agent.
