After briefly working in radio, he transitioned to print journalism in the mid-1980s, serving as the Central American Bureau Chief for what was then known as the Spanish International Network and as a print journalist for United Press International.
Diaz-Balart later established himself as a television news reporter in Miami, where he worked for WTVJ from 1988 until May 1996, when he was hired by CBS. When he began anchoring for the CBS News program This Morning in August 1996, he made history by becoming the first Cuban-American to host a network news program. By the year 2000, he had left CBS to become the anchor of a new Telemundo morning show called Esta Manana.
Later, he co-hosted Esta Maana, Telemundo Network’s first-morning news and entertainment show, as well as Cada Da, the network’s public affairs show. By 2002, the bilingual anchor had begun hosting Enfoque con José Diaz-Balart, a once-month interview program on Telemundo, on which he had interviewed a wide range of newsmakers, including political leaders and presidential candidates. In 2003, he returned to English-language television and his former Miami station, WTVJ, as a news anchor. By 2010, he was working as a reporter for NBC.
He made history when he filled in for Contessa Brewer on MSNBC Live from June 20 to 24, 2011, in the show’s 12 p.m. time slot, becoming the first U.S. journalist to broadcast both English and Spanish newscasts on two networks at the same time.
He was given his own one-hour daytime news program on MSNBC in September 2015. Diaz-Balart won a national Emmy for his work with Telemundo Network. While working at WTVJ-TV in Miami, he won two Emmys, an Associated Press Award, and four Hispanic Excellence in Journalism Awards in the 1980s. In 2006, he also received a Du Pont and Peabody award, as well as the Orchid award for being the best news anchor in the United States.
Three times, Media 100 named him the best anchor, and Hispanic Business Magazine named him one of the “100 most influential people in the United States.” In 2010, he received the Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Television Sciences.
At the 10th Annual Hispanic Television Summit, produced by Schramm Marketing Group, he received the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Hispanic Television from Multichannel News and Broadcasting & Cable in 2012. MSNBC announced on May 20, 2014, that Diaz-Balart would begin hosting the 10 a.m. news hour in mid-June. He took over for Chris Jansing, who was recently named NBC News Senior White House Correspondent.
On November 10, 2014, it was announced that he would take over as host of The Daily Rundown on November 17, 2014, with the program expanding to two hours, essentially absorbing his eponymous show that had previously aired during the second hour.
The Daily Rundown was renamed MSNBC Live with Jose Diaz-Balart in 2015 as part of a larger restructuring of MSNBC’s daytime programming. He also started working as a fill-in anchor for NBC Nightly News on Saturdays in late 2015. In July 2016, he was officially named host of that program, and he still holds that position today.
