Bettes attended local schools when he was growing up. Later on, he went on to join Ohio State University (OSU) where he studied between 1990 and 1995. There, he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology.

Bettes works for The Weather Channel where he serves the station as an On-Camera Meteorologist. Aside from this, he was also serving as a co-host for AMHQ: America’s Morning Headquarters. In addition to this, he also co-hosts Weather Underground TV. In addition to this, he has been an on-camera Meteorologist for TWC from the year 2003. Aside from this, he is an occasional fill-in weather anchor on The Today Show.

In addition to this, he was also hosting Abrams and Bettes Beyond the Forecast between 2006 and 2009. He also worked for Your Weather Today between 2009 and 2012. The show was relaunched as Morning Rush and hosted the show into 2014. Later on, the program was relaunched in March of the same year as America’s Morning Headquarters.

During the other incident, the same tornado killed TWISTEX storm chaser, Tim Samaras, his son Paul, and colleague Carl Young of South Lake Tahoe, California. The storm chaser, Dan Robinson of St. Louis, Missouri escaped the tornado with a few injuries. Additionally, he was a few hundred yards ahead of the TIWISTEX crew.

Later on, after local resident Richard Charles Henderson was killed in the same area as the TWISTEX crew after deciding to chase the storm. She had sent a picture of the twister to a friend using his cell phone just before the storm struck him.

A University of Oklahoma student named Billy Prater and his father, together with a friend sought after refuge under an overpass when the storm changed direction. This action is strongly discouraged in these situations. The group was lucky to survive the ordeal.
