Mireya Villarreal Miscarriage

Villarreal had her first miscarriage in July 2017 on the ridge of a burnt hill on the outskirts of Yosemite National Park. At the time, she alongside a male production crew had trekked for 45 minutes to the top hill after the Detwiler fire in Mariposa County. She went on the assignment after less than four hours of sleep from Arizona where they had broadcasted a flood that swept a family away.

At the time, Villarreal said that she felt excruciating pain in her abdomen near the C-section scar from her first son. She was nine weeks pregnant and had only shared the news with her husband, some family members, and a few female coworkers. Aside from the pain, she was bleeding nonstop. After the assignment had ended a day later, she bled for five more days and visited her OB-GYN two more times to confirm that she had miscarried.

Villarreal blamed herself for the miscarriage because she felt ill and still went on the assignment due to her ambition and selfishness. Ultimately, she went to therapy to help through her buried feelings of guilt and anger towards herself and her co-workers even though they had no idea. She said that she still struggles with forgiving herself for the miscarriage but she’s getting better. Also, she said that she still wants another child and a bigger family.

Moreover, she appeared on CBS Evening News, CBS This Morning, and CBSN. Mireya Villarreal Thyroid

Villarreal discovered that she had hyperthyroidism after a nurse viewer reached out to her. The nurse told her that she had noticed that her eyes had begun to bulge and that her throat had started to swell. The news made Villarreal visit the hospital where she received her diagnosis.

Villarreal took Methimazole or Tapazole as medication which helped her stabilize the issue for a while. However, doctors told her that the medication was not long-term and was harmful for pregnant women. Also, doctors thought that the medication was negatively impacting her chances of getting pregnant. Thus, she and her husband decided to have her thyroid surgically removed.

Before the surgery, Villarreal couldn’t run, had high temperatures, rapidly lost hair, and was always eating. At times, she had difficulty breathing due to the swelling of her thyroid closing up her windpipe. These symptoms plus the effects of the medicine helped ehr to make the decision. Due to the removal of her thyroid, she takes medicine that helps produce the hormones that her thyroid used to make. Fortunately, the medicine has minimal side effects.

Villarreal revealed that she shared the procedure so that she could raise awareness of the importance of the thyroid, frequently get checked for thyroid issues, and let people know that the disease can affect anyone, men, women, and even young adults.
