Nikki Battiste Education

Battiste is a proud graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Politics, Philosophy & Economics. During her stint at the university, she served the school’s Field Hockey Team as a captain.

Nikki Battiste Career

Battiste serves at CBS News as a national correspondent based in New York. She reports across all CBS News broadcasts and platforms, including “CBS This Morning,” the “CBS Evening News” and CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 live, streaming news service. She began as a freelance correspondent at FOX 5.

Battiste’s landmark inquiries into the 2018 Catholic Church sexual assault crisis have earned critical praise. Her initial interview on television first led to two church assault survivors sitting face-to-face with the priest, who claimed they were raped as infants. During a separate report of the CBS News Investigation Unit, Battiste and her staff discovered claims of sexual assault against a priest currently in active ministry in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, presided over by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

After Battiste asked DiNardo about the accusations, the priest was suspended from his ministry. Two months after Battiste’s exclusive interview with now-former Washington, D.C. Archbishop, Cardinal Donald Wuerl, in August 2018, he resigned. She also broke the news of nuns sexually assaulting minors, which resulted in more than 40 more people coming forward. In February 2019, Battiste flew to Rome to cover Pope Francis’ Vatican summit on the crisis of clergy rape.

Since joining CBS News, she has covered the gun issue in America and was the first to report on armed teachers in the classroom, which started a nationwide dialogue. She has covered and written numerous articles for the “CBS News Evening News” segment “Eye on America,” including a teacher strike in Sacramento and a discussion over arming college students on campus.

She also sat down with five sisters who had been sexually assaulted by the same priest for an “Eye on America” article. Her highlights included a look at ground-breaking brain science that could assist in the treatment of suicide and mental disorders, innovative food contamination technologies, and the wild horse epidemic in the American West.

Battiste has reported press releases for the network, including Hurricane Michael, the Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting, the Colorado Missing Mum, Kelsey Berreth, and the New Zealand Mosque Shooting. In May 2017, Battiste started her career as a freelance reporter for CBS Newspath, the network’s 24-hour news service for CBS stations and broadcasters around the world. She reported looking for four missing men in Pennsylvania, a shooting at Parkland Academy, and an Austin bomber.

Previously, she was an award-winning New York-based ABC News producer and reporter. She traveled the globe to report reporting and highlight stories on all ABC News television networks, including “Good Morning America,” “World News Tonight,” “Nightline,” “20/20” and ABCNews.com. In ABC News, Battiste posted thoroughly on the case of Amanda Knox from Perugia, Italy, and the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 from Perth, Australia. Battiste was the first interviewer in the country to sit down for an interview with Amanda Knox.

She has received a number of Emmy, Edward R Murrow, and CINE Golden Eagle awards and Peabody, Deadline, and FrontPage awards. At “20/20,” Battiste’s own investigation exposed facts that helped exonerate a law enforcement officer who had been wrongfully accused of sexually assaulting his own children. She also commented on the Presidential elections in 2016, Pope Francis’ visit to the United States, the Ebola crisis, and Hurricane Sandy. She co-produced other Diane Sawyer specials, including America’s Declining Middle Class, and interviewed the youngest woman on death row and Newtown’s heroic teacher, Kaitlin Roig.
