In 2006, he was the producer/writer of the documentary, “Three Days in September,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. The film, narrated by Julia Roberts, was nominated for the Emmy Award and voted one of New York Magazine’s best documentaries in 2006. He previously worked as a reporter for WFAA-TV in Dallas(1982-84) before joining CBS News.

Van Sant worked as a weekend anchor and reporter for KOOL T-V in Phoenix (1978-82) and as a reporter for KETV in Omaha (1977-78) and KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids (1976-77). Columbia University awarded him its Alfred I. DuPont’s Award for thoroughly writing on the fall of the Soviet Union. Additionally, he has covered the first Gulf War, the reunification of Germany, starvation in Africa, and many other stories that carried him to Europe and the Middle East.

Van Sant moved to New York, where he wrote for the CBS News magazines “Street Stories” (1991-93) and “America Tonight” (1994). He was later transferred to the “CBS Evening News” (1995-97). Van Sant was appointed the correspondent for “Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel” (1997-98). He was the first TV journalist to write on the catastrophic drought in North Korea, earning his third Emmy Award. His study on rape in the Balkans was the result of the American Women’s Radio and Television Award. Van Sant was also part of the undercover investigation team of CBS News, which discovered and reported an indicted war criminal in Bosnia. He received the Overseas Press Club Award for this article.
