Roberts is a TV personality and an anchor who started her journalism career in 1983 after landing a job at WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where she served as a reporter and sports anchor. Come 1984, she left the station for WLOX-TV in Biloxi, Mississippi where she served as a reporter and anchor. She then left the station in 1986 and joined hands with WSMV-TV in Nashville, Tennessee where she served as a sports anchor and reporter.
She then moved to WAGA-TV in Atlanta, Georgia from 1988 to 1990 where she served as a sports anchor and reporter. While in Atlanta, Georgia, she also spent some time working as a radio host for radio station V-103. In 1990, Roberts joined hands with ESPN where she served as a sportscaster till 2005 when she left for ABC News. Her career at ABC News started in June 1995 when she served as a featured reporter for Good Morning America.
She worked at both Good Morning America and ESPN and was contributing to both programs at the same time. Come 2005, Roberts was given a raise and started serving as the co-anchor of Good Morning America. George Stephanopoulos joined her as a co-anchor of GMA after Diane Sawyer left to anchor ABC World News. Roberts-Stephanopoulos team led Good Morning America back to the top of the ratings and the program became the number-one morning show again in April 2012.

Roberts was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) in 2012 which is a disease that affects the bone marrow. Right after Roberts went public about her illness, a nonprofit organization by the name of ‘Be the Match Registry’ which is run by the National Marrow Donor Program, experienced a 1,800 percent spike in donors. She had to take a break from GMA so as to focus more on her health and get a bone marrow transplant.
On February 20, 2013, she made a return to GMA and continued with the show. In 2012, she received a Peabody Award for the program and also credited her for allowing her network to document and build a public service campaign around her battle with a rare disease. Hundreds of bone marrow donors came out and this was after she came out and addressed and raised awareness of the disease. She was also awarded its Arthur Ashe Courage Award to Roberts at the 2013 ESPYs. Furthermore, she was awarded the Sager Strong Award at its award ceremony on June 20, 2019, by the National Basketball Association.
