Seth Meyers Career

Meyers serves on NBC News as the host of Late Night with Seth Meyers, a late-night talk show on NBC, that premiered on February 24, 2014. He ran a hot dog stand while attending Northwestern University. He began performing improv comedy as a member of the Northwestern University improv sketch group Mee-Ow Show at the time.

He continued his career with the group Preponderate at ImprovOlympic, as well as overseas as a cast member of Boom Chicago, an English language improv troupe based in Amsterdam, where his brother was also a cast member. When a Boom Chicago show he created was staged in Chicago, talent scouts from Saturday Night Live approached him and invited him to audition.

Meyers joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2001. He was promoted to writing supervisor in 2005, and in January 2006, he was named co-head writer alongside Tina Fey and Andrew Steele. In 2004, he auditioned for the role of Weekend Update co-anchor with Fey but was defeated by Amy Poehler.

With Fey’s departure, Meyers took over as head writer for the 2006–2007 season, as well as Weekend Update co-anchor with Amy Poehler. Meyers anchored solo between 2008 and 2013 after Poehler’s departure. In the 2013–2014 season, Meyers was joined as co-anchor by Cecily Strong. Meyers and Poehler co-hosted two episodes of Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday in the fall of 2009.

Meyers played characters such as John Kerry, Michael Caine, Anderson Cooper, Carrot Top, Prince Charles, Ryan Seacrest, Sean Penn, Stone Phillips, Tobey Maguire, Peyton Manning, Ben Curtis, Ty Pennington, Bill Cowher, Brian Williams, Nicollette Sheridan, Wade Robson, Donald Trump, Jr., Tom Cruise, and Kevin Federline on Saturday Night Live.

Meyers wrote the sketches for former SNL cast member Tina Fey, who returned as a guest star to impersonate Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin during the 2008 United States presidential election. Meyers coined the famous phrase “I can see Russia from my house,” which was uttered by Fey’s Palin.

Meyers and Poehler had a popular recurring bit on Weekend Update called “Really!?! with Seth and Amy.” Both hosts would take turns mocking people in the news, concluding each segment with a heavily sarcastic “Really?!?” that Rolling Stone writer Jon Blistein described as a “torrent of exasperation and bewilderment.”

Following Poehler’s departure from the show in 2008, the “Really?!?” segment was revived several times when she returned as a guest. Poehler made a surprise appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers in June 2015 to join Meyers in mocking Sports Illustrated sportswriter Andy Benoit, who had disparaged women’s sports as “not worth watching.”

Furthermore, the “Abe Lincoln” sketch Meyers wrote for Louis C.K., done in the style of his sitcom, Louie, and the Girls parody, starring Tina Fey as the new Albanian “girl,” were both praised by critics as among the best sketches of Meyers contributed to SNL. Meyers supported and picketed during the Writers Guild of America strike in 2007–08. In interviews, he stated that he regretted missing much of the presidential election primary season.

Meyers appeared in his final episode of Saturday Night Live on February 1, 2014. Strong was joined at the Weekend Update desk by Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, and Fred Armisen. Meyers hosted the show again in 2018, with Paul Simon as the musical guest.
