Steve Hartman Career and Education
Hartman graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1985 with a degree in broadcasting journalism. He currently serves at CBS as a CBS News correspondent based in New York. He gives audiences moving tales about the unique people he encounters in his weekly award-winning feature segment “On the Road”—which airs every Friday on “CBS Evening News” and repeats on “CBS Sunday Morning.” “On the Road” is based on the long-running, iconic series of the same name originally recorded by one of America’s biggest TV storytellers, late newsman Charles Kuralt.
Hartman is also well known for his many award-winning feature shows, “Everybody Has a Story.” Hartman proved the adage by throwing a dart on the map of America and then arbitrarily choosing an interview topic from the local phone book. Debuting in 1998, and continuing for the next seven years, Hartman has created more than 120 such bits. Hartman took over the series on a global scale in 2010. In collaboration with NASA, each chapter of “Everybody in the World Has a Story” started with an astronaut at the International Space Station spinning a globe and pointing to random places for Hartman to travel to find a story.
He has received scores of coveted broadcast journalism honors for his work: the Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Award, three Emmy national awards, and nine RTNDA/Edward R. Murrow awards, including seven best-writing citations. Previously Hartman was a reporter for 60 Minutes on Wednesday and was the correspondent for two prime-time CBS News magazines, “Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel” (1997-98) and “Coast to Coast” (1996-97).
Before working at CBS News magazines, he was a feature writer for KCBS-TV, a station owned by CBS in Los Angeles (1994-98), WABC-TV in New York (1991-94), and KSTP-TV in Minneapolis (1987-91). He started his career as a news intern and general assignment reporter at WTOL-TV in Toledo, Ohio (1984-87) (1984-87).
